A massive operation recently conducted by the U.S. immigrantion and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency resulted in hundreds of arrests in California. It has been reported that over 200 immigrants were detained by ICE agents at the end of August in the southern portion of the state. Some of these individuals are to be criminally prosecuted, while others will be sent to deportation and removal proceedings.
Numerous law enforcement agencies across California have opted not to detain undocumented immigrants for ICE, which has contributed to a decrease in arrests and deportations. In fact, on a national level in 2014, the number of removals dropped approximately 24 percent. This has resulted in the agency taking actions such at this recent four-day sting operation. According to immigrantion officials, this is necessary as those typically arrested allegedly have criminal records and are considered threats to public safety.
Few details have been released regarding the criminal records of those detained. immigrantion agents have only alleged that there is a mix of felony and misdemeanor convictions. At this time, it is unknown if any court dates have been scheduled for criminal or deportation proceedings.
