Resolving Immigration Problems In An Honest & Responsible Manner

How do I become a naturalized citizen of the United States?

When you're a legal permanent resident of the United States, you can apply for citizenship through the process of naturalization if you meet the necessary criteria. For example, new citizens of the United States need to show that they have English literacy, good moral character and a general knowledge of U.S. government, history and laws.

Here is a little more detail on the requirements for becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen:

Age

To become naturalized in the United States, you need to be at least 18 years of age.

Residency

You need to have obtained legal permanent residency and have an Alien Registration Card.

Physical presence

You need to have been present in the United States for a minimum of 30 months during the past five years.

Good moral character

Most immigrants will be subject to a five-year criminal background check, and they might not be naturalized if they have been convicted of serious crimes. Those who are married to a U.S. citizen will only be subject to a three-year check for good character.

English language ability

Applicants for naturalization need to show that they can speak, read, write and understand the English language. Certain applicants might be able to be exempt from this requirement depending on their ages and/or mental conditions.

Knowledge of U.S. history and government

The applicant must show that he or she possesses a general understanding of U.S. government and history.

Your pathway to naturalization as a U.S. citizen might seem somewhat involved, but it is certainly not impossible. If you're interested in becoming naturalized, learn more about U.S. immigration and citizenship law now.
