Resolving Immigration Problems In An Honest & Responsible Manner

Asylum Q and A

Those who enter the United States seeking asylum, or those who are considering making this type of move, may have a lot of questions about the process. Asylum is not easily or freely granted to just anyone. This particular article will address some common questions asylum seekers may have, whether they currently reside in California or elsewhere.

One of the first questions one might have is pretty straightforward: Who is eligible for asylum? Those seeking asylum must already be physically present in the United States. Asylum must be applied for within one year of arriving. A credible reason for seeking asylum must be provided.

Another question one might have is: How do I apply for asylum? Certain legal forms will need to be filed with immigrantion authorities. One can list family members all on the same form, such as a spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21. An experienced immigrantion attorney can assist with filing the appropriate paperwork, whether for oneself or the whole family.

The last question that will be addressed is: How long does the asylum process take? This will vary on a case-by-case basis, but typically an interview will be scheduled within 45 days of an application being received, and a decision will be made shortly after that has occurred. This can change, though, based on the number of cases currently being processed.

These are just a few basic questions about the asylum process. It is completely understandable that one might have more, depending on his or her own personal circumstances. An experienced immigrantion attorney can assist asylum seekers in California with any questions they may have and with working through the immigrantion system. Though it can be tough and time consuming, with help the process may be completed as swiftly and smoothly as possible.
