Applying for immigration papers can be incredibly stressful. You may feel as if your whole future depends on a positive outcome. Or that your life is on hold until you receive a definite yes or no.
It’s understandable and to some degree true. If the visa does not come off, then you may have to change your plans. Maybe you can’t take that job or attend the college you hoped. Perhaps you won’t be able to marry the person you are in love with.
However, it’s important not to let the stress and worry get the better of you. Unless it is a matter of safety, such as fleeing persecution in your home country, life will almost certainly go on whether you get the visa or not. You can still create a life you enjoy, even if it is different from the one you hoped for.
1. Stay realistic
Not all visa applications succeed. Many people see theirs rejected each year. Avoiding pinning all your hopes on it and remembering to enjoy the present can reduce the stress of the situation.
2. Find people to talk to
Find people who can help you keep things in perspective or people who can offer a supportive ear while you can share your concerns. If this is not working for you, you could seek out trained help such as from a psychologist.
3. Know when you have done all you can
While a failure to get the visa you want would be upsetting, learning your application was rejected because of a mistake you made would be even more so.
Consider legal guidance to give yourself the very best chance of success, safe in the knowledge that you have done everything you can. Remember, if you do make a mistake, there is often a chance to correct that mistake and reapply, too.
