How to read the Visa Bulletin: A guide for families

The U.S. immigration process can be challenging and intimidating, but obtaining a green card is not impossible. While there are multiple steps involved, understanding each one can help you navigate the procedure confidently.

One aspect you should consider learning more about is the U.S. Visa Bulletin. This monthly publication informs you of the availability of immigrant visas. To help you or a family member read the bulletin, here are some recommended tips.

Take note of your priority date

Your priority date acts as your position in line. It is also the date when the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) receives your petition. Upon approval, the USCIS mails you an I-797 form, where you can find your priority date.

When your turn comes, the U.S. Visa Bulletin will include your date in its announcement. Due to the limited number of visas available per year, it may take some time before seeing your priority date on the bulletin.

Understand the charts in the bulletin

In the bulletin, there are two sections you need to review under the family-sponsored preference cases:

  • Final action dates: If your priority date is in this chart, it means your green card is ready for approval and issuance.
  • Dates for filing: If your priority date is in this chart, it means you can submit an application to adjust your status while waiting for a green card.

When looking at these charts, ensure you review the appropriate preference category for your case.

Actions to take while waiting for your turn

Receiving news about your immigration application may take a long time due to the limited number of visas available annually. While waiting, it would be best for you and your family to stay updated. Consider checking the Visa Bulletin every month to track your place in the queue. If you need assistance, an immigration attorney can interpret the bulletin and provide clarifications.
